Environmentally-friendly manufacturing
Respect for the environment is more than just a pipe dream at Mewaf. The company aims for a production policy with as little impact on the environment as possible, through a well-thought out waste disposal and recycling policy, and rational consumption of energy and other resources. Mewaf also demands the same environmentally-friendly awareness from its suppliers. Together with an external expert on environmental issues, Mewaf is constantly looking for more environmentally-friendly production methods.
A rich history
It’s 1929 and Raymond Van Marcke is setting up a wholesale business in sanitary equipment and heating appliances in Kortrijk. It’s a success from day one. In a matter of years, Van Marcke becomes the market leader in Belgium with a 40% market share.
Less than 10 years after the foundation of the company, the company president decides to venture into new areas. One of these is metal processing and the production of office furniture. The second world war temporarily puts a stop to these plans, but in 1948 Mewaf (metaal waren fabriek or metalware factory) becomes a reality.
Alongside the Belgian government, schools and the defence ministry, many SME’s and businesses as well as private individuals choose Mewaf as their supplier for office furniture.
In the 50’s, Raymond Van Marcke’s son, Carl, injects new life into the company. He is the first in Europe to develop and produce a flexible furniture entity integrating desk, cabinet and screen. The modular office system is born. Towards the end of the 50’s Mewaf is the market leader in Belgium. With the help of acquisitions the company ranks in the top ten of Europe’s office furniture manufacturers.
Group power
Mewaf is a full-blown subsidiary of the Van Marcke group. This holding consists of a lot of companies in very diverse sectors, with 1,570 employees. Thanks to this Mewaf can rely on the support of a financially extremely healthy and powerful group.
The various subsidiaries work together in support of each other with their diverse synergies and cross-pollination. Transport, printing, HRM, marketing, logistics, buildings, packaging, and storage – these are just some of the areas in which Van Marcke operates.
Trendsetter in design and quality
Right from the outset, Mewaf set itself up as a pioneer and innovator in the office furniture trade. Lots of inventions would follow in the footsteps of the first integrated modular office system. The concept of the sliding door cupboard is also one of the inventions that evolved from the collaboration with Mewaf’s sister company Marcadet.
A policy of continuous reinvestment in people and machines is one of the company’s hallmarks. This has enabled them to build up a solid reputation as the supplier of top quality products.
Integrated production (110,000 m² production facility)
The complete production process is integrated, from treatment of the steel coils, through delivery and assembly of the finished products at the customer end, to the after-sales service.

Van Marcke is still a 100% family-owned company. The holding is managed by the second and thirth generation of the Van Marcke family.
